Year round, with leaves or without, trees I consider to be the coolest plant on the planet.
On June 13 1886 what was then downtown Vancouver Canada burned to the ground. The fire began south east of what is now the core and spread quickly in the late spring winds from Washington State north west. Dozens of lives were lost and a recently logged peninsula forest, what eventually became Vancouver's famous Stanley Park, was scorched.
The day after the great fire Vancouver created it's first fire department and a new old growth 120+ year old Douglas Fir tree, like this beauty was no doubt born.
